New PIlab Member: Eelco Herder

Eelco Herder joined the Digital Security group at the Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen on 1 July. His research background is centered around the areas Personalization and Recommendation, User Modeling, Web Science and Human-Computer Interaction. At the Digital Security group, his research will focus on the fine balance between the benefits of personalization and risks associated with privacy matters.

In the previous years, at the L3S Research Center in Hannover, Germany, Eelco was involved in several projects focused on how to model user activities and use these models for supporting information finding and refinding, personalizing social media and news feeds, and improving e-learning. He is board member of User Modeling Inc., the steering committee of the annual UMAP conferences.

In the past, he investigated how users would respond to different types of notifications that their social media behavior might negatively impact their careers. He also looked at privacy settings in the social web, and the additional information that can be gained by combining information from different user profiles. At the Radboud Universiteit, he will further explore user awareness, user behavior and user responses to perceived and actual privacy risks on the Web.
